Quarterfinals Decided At Vic Bay Surf Pro QS 1,000

VICTORIA BAY, George, Western Cape, South Africa (Saturday, March 22, 2025) - The World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) Vic Bay Surf Pro wrapped up the first day of competition in fun, contestable conditions to determine the men's and women's Quarterfinals. The next call will be tomorrow, Sunday, 23 March at 7:30 a.m. GMT+2.
Despite long lulls between sets and multiple delays due to fog, it was incredible to be back at Vic Bay for Stop No. 5 of the 2024/2025 WSL Africa QS season. Partnering with George Municipality, it means a lot to the surfers to compete at Vic Bay for the first WSL QS since 2019.
The women's Quarterfinals will see Remi Fourie take on Challenger Series competitor Jessie Van Niekerk. Fourie won the women's Opening Round heat, with Emily Jenkinson in second, as both surfers booked their spots in the Quarterfinal.
"It was a bit tricky out there with the long lulls," Fourie said. "When the sets came, there were a few nuggets that were really contestable. I managed to pull one or two of those off in the heat, which I'm stoked about."
Heat 3 of the women's Quarterfinals will be an exciting goofy-foot matchup between WSL Africa QS rankings leader Louise Lepront and former top-ranked South African goofy-footer Zoë Steyn. Steyn returns to competition after a nine month hiatus to focus on her school career.
Showing no signs of slowing down despite his insurmountable lead on the WSL Africa QS rankings, Luke Thompson executed an excellent heat with a total of 16.60 (out of a possible 20) to advance to the Quarterfinals.
"The waves were super fun in that heat, the mist cleared up and there were so many sets, everyone had good waves," Thompson said. "Luckily I put myself on two good waves and just stuck to my strengths. I'm stoked with how I'm surfing, I'm relaxed, feeling good and hopefully I can keep it going. Everyone's ripping, it's a fun event."
Last weekend's SA Open of Surfing winner Connor Slijpen and WSL Africa QS No.2 Adin Masencamp are neck-and-neck on the WSL Africa QS rankings, and both surfers continue their campaign for Challenger Series qualification as they reach the Quarterfinals.
Joshe Faulkner will improve his chances for requalification if he can continue his strong performance at the Vic Bay Surf Pro after Thomas Lindhorst, Luc Lepront and Luke Slijpen were eliminated from competition in the Round of 16.
The Vic Bay Surf Pro will run from 22-23 March 2025. The next call will be on Sunday, 23 March at 7:30 a.m. GMT+2.
