In 2014, a trip to the bottom after a round 3 wipeout left Bede Durbidge with a broken pelvis and a competitive career in jeopardy. Bede would spend Christmas and New Years in an Oahu hospital before extensive rehab set him back for an entire year. Durbidge would battle back and return to the water, and briefly to competition, but would eventually retire to coach John John Florence to his first World Title.
