For the first three quarters of 2017, the 3x World Champ was mired in a mystifying competitive funk, the likes of which she had never experienced. It was a confounding time for the Hawaiian who, despite her world-class pedigree, could not find a way past the Quarterfinal round for the first seven stops on Tour.

Then, following another 5th place finish at the Swatch Pro Trestles, she travelled to Central California for Kelly Slater’s Future Classic , which was essentially an exhibition, and won. But her after the win, her confidence seemed to return. Not long after her wave pool victory, she finished 2nd in Portugal at the Cascais Women’s Pro, and went on to win the Roxy Pro France just one week later. She jumped up three spots on the Jeep Leaderboard with one event remaining.

Her relationship with Honolua Bay, host wave to the season-ending Maui Women’s Pro, is iconic. It’s the location of many of her signature moments on Tour, a place where she’s clinched World Titles.
