PLAYA DE SOPELANA, Euskadi – Basque Country (Wednesday, June 19, 2013) - Stop n°2 of our ASP Europe Men's and Women's Pro Junior Series has just been confirmed in Basque Country's beautiful Sopelana from July 25-28, 2013 ! Our continent's very best under-20 surfers will again come prepared to do battle on the typical Basque beach and enjoy the peeling right and lefthand beachbreaks Sopelana has to offer.
A strong 2013 Junior schedule promises a hard fought title race with seasoned competitors menaced by younger up-and-comers and hungry outsiders. The arena provided by Sopelana's main beach is the perfect way to draw the public's attention to the potential surfing stars of tomorrow and the ever-rising level of progressive surfing displayed. The ASP 1-Star Men's and Women's Sopelana Pro Junior will offer a total prizepurse of $7,000 and valuable ranking points toward qualification for the World Juniors.
Last year's Women's event winner Cannelle Bulard (REU) 19, will return to Sopelana to defend her title and try to confirm she's still Europe's finest after winning the European title in 2012. With already a couple solid results under her belt earlier this year in Australia, Bulard is looking forward to get the season rolling in Europe and put the competition vest back on.
"It's great news," Bulard stated. "I'm happy that Sopelana is happening again this year, it's always a pleasure to go there. For me eating tortillas, surf in a bikini and just tan at the beach really does it ! The Basque people are always super welcoming with us and I hope I can win it a third time !"
In the men's division, the field is wide open with previous winner Vicente Romero (ESP) 20, out of the equation giving room to many possible threats to make their move. Rob Gunning, ASP Europe's Tour Manager is looking forward to yet another exciting stop on the Junior Series.
"The Sopelana Pro Junior is always a very well supported event by the surfers both male and female," Gunning said. "As one of our longer running events it always shapes up to four days of incredible surfing in the rippable waves at Sopelana's main beach. I am sure we are in for another exciting event this year and I would like to invite all our top juniors to come and participate at the Sopelana Pro Junior 2013."
The Sopelana Pro Junior is made possible with the support of the following event partners: Peña Txuri Surf Eskola, Ayuntamiento de Sopelana, Euskadi Turismo, Diputacion Foral Vizcaya, Surfing Euskadi-Basque Country, Red Bull, Bar El Peñon, Euskal Herriko Surf Federazioa, Bizkaiko Surf Federazioa amongst others.
