Despite posting the single highest wave score of the heat, an 8.70, Fanning couldn't put it together with a second high-scoring ride and was eliminated in equal-fifth place.

Gabriel Medina suffered a huge upset at the hands of Adrian Buchan in the Quarterfinals.
Adrian Buchan surfed out of his boots, netting two of the highest waves of the day to eliminate ratings leader Gabriel Medina from the event.

The ocean failed to cooperate with De Souza, who only managed a single scoring ride in his Quarterfinal against John John Florence. The score wasn't enough to keep him in the contest.

John John Florence, full of smiles after delivering pay back to Slater. His Semifinals win was vindication after the pair met in Tahiti when Slater defeated Florence, also in the Semifinals.

Florence posted the highest two-wave heat total and single-wave score of the competition on his rampage to the Final. He now sits at No. 8 on the ASP WCT Rankings
Kelly Slater finished with his third Semifinal place of the season after being eliminated by Florence.
Local knowledge provided crucial in wave selection for Jordy Smith, who stole the lead from Florence in the dying minutes to win the Final by 16.50 (9.33 and 7.17) for Smith to Florence’s 15.87 (8.6 and 7.27). Smith, a South African native, relocated to San Clemente this year.
“I feel unbelievable,†said Smith. “To be able to surf against the best surfer in the world at the moment is incredible."
"I knew I had to do something good," Smith said. "I’m over the moon, it’s a dream of mine to win Trestles, especially after moving here with my wife Lyndall.â€
Smith's victory is his first WCT win of the season and the fourth of his career.
