The Association of Surfing Professionals 4-star Vans Pro and 2-Star Vans Pro Junior are set to run at First Street Jetty from August 18 through 24 as a part of the 52nd annual Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
The ASP Qualification Series (QS) event kicks off a three-event East Coast leg, running though to mid-September while the Vans Pro Junior will determine qualifiers for the coveted ASP World Junior Championships.
Last year's Vans Pro winner Patrick Gudauskas (USA), 28, will look to defend his title while enjoying the change of scenery that the East Coast has to offer. Gudauskas, current No. 17 on the QS, is working toward building his ranking in hopes of returning to the main stage of the ASP World Championship Tour (WCT).
"Its great to return as defending champion,†Gudauskas said. “Any time you can win an ASP event, it's a huge accomplishment in my book. My victory last year came at a great time for me because it transferred me into a big run at Lowers, where I overcame Kelly Slater. I'm fired up at the opportunity to do the same this year, both defending the title and creating a kick start to the second half of my qualification campaign.â€
Tanner Gudauskas (USA), 26, will also be competing at the Vans Pro fresh off of a win at the recent 5-Star QS event in Lacanau, France.
Michael Dunphy (USA), 22, is one local standout who hopes to capitalize on his knowledge of First Street Jetty at the Vans Pro with aspirations of a solid result in his hometown.
"Last year I had a bad year and this year I'm just trying to have fun and surf better,†Dunphy said. “I surf First Street all the time and feel really comfortable out there. Hopefully, I can get a few waves. I've been surfing ECSC since I was five. It's a special event to me and I'd like to try to win one."
ECSC will also play host to the 2-Star Vans Pro Junior event giving rising stars under 21 years old a chance to build crucial points and a potential berth into the 2014 ASP World Junior Championships.
The Vans Pro and Vans Pro Junior will be webcast LIVE beginning Monday August 18th on this site as well as surfecsc.com.
