Red Nose Pro Junior Underway in Baia Formosa
WSL
The 2014 ASP Red Nose Pro Junior in Baia Formosa, located in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, kicked off with waves in the 1-metre range. Conditions allowed for the completion of Round 1, eliminating half the field of competitors.
Local surfer Italo Ferreira (BRA) began his campaign by posting the day's highest scores, earning a 9.50 and a heat total of a 17.50 at the right-hand pointbreak to qualify directly into Round 2.
"It feels great to catch a couple of good waves and win my heat," said Ferreira. "I was a little anxious to get that first heat out of the way since I'm competing in front of my hometown crowd. I'd like to win the World Pro Junior title this year and it feels incredible to have all this support behind me."
Despite coming off a Semifinals finish last week at the Vans US Open of Surfing, current Luan Wood (BRA) was upset in Round 1, Heat 1 by Paulo Lucas Lima (BRA) and Gabriel Andre (BRA). In addition to his recent success, Wood is the ASP South America Pro Junior Champion and the Red Nose event top seed.
Young surfer Facundo Arreyes (ARG), who currently resides in Rio, had no trouble acclimating to the waves at Pontal. He topped Patricio Oliveira (PRT), Miguel Marinho (PRT) and Felipe Martins (BRA) for a second round bid.
"This is my first time surfing in this area and the only thing I knew was that Fabio Gouveia [a former WCT surfer] and Italo Ferreira are from here," said Arreyes. "It looks a lot like Buzios, where I live, which is a small fishing town that's very laid back. I was able to start the event off well with a victory and I need to keep doing my best because everyone here is so talented."
The 2014 ASP South America Red Nose Pro Junior event is presented by Red Nose and is approved by the ASP South America regional office as the second event in the ASP South America Pro Junior Series. The event is broadcast live at aspsouthamerica.com.
