LOS ANGELES, California, USA (Friday, August 25, 2023) - The World Surf League (WSL) is pleased to announce that Connor O'Leary will officially represent Japan on the Championship Tour (CT) in 2024. While O'Leary will proudly wear both the Australian and Japanese flags on his jersey, his official representation will be for Japan.
O'Leary, who has previously represented Australia on the WSL Tours, expressed his sentiments on the switch in a heartfelt post on his Instagram. "After much reflection and consideration I am choosing Japan," O'Leary shared. "I'm choosing to represent my family's heritage, and my cultural background."
The decision aligns with O'Leary's deep-rooted connection to Japan, a country that holds significant personal and familial ties for him. His switch is not just a strategic move for his career as he looks toward the final remaining spot on Team Japan for the 2024 Paris Games via the ISA qualification, but to honor his mother, Akemi Karasawa, who is a former Japanese surfing champion.
Since his debut on the WSL scene, O'Leary has consistently showcased his prowess in the water, earning accolades and respect from peers and fans alike. Known for his powerful turns and tactical approach, O'Leary earned the WSL Rookie of the Year award in 2017.
Drawing parallels to surfers like Tatiana Weston-Webb and Kanoa Igarashi, who have made similar switches in the past, O'Leary's decision is a testament to the global nature of the sport and the diverse backgrounds of the athletes.
O'Leary will compete under Japan for the first time on the 2024 Championship Tour.
