On World Ocean Day, June 8, 2023, WSL One Ocean announced its #SpeakUpForTheOcean campaign. The campaign asks fans to share their stories and sustainability initiatives through social media by using the hashtag #WSLOneOcean and tagging @wsl and @wsloneocean. Carla Henriquez was recently announced as the July #SpeakUpForTheOcean hero.
Henriquez is a photographer, content creator, and passionate surfer from the Canary Islands. The Canary Islands is a touristic place and has problems relating to the fast development of the islands. Henriquez is creating content to raise awareness around ocean conservation and to inspire everyone inside and outside of her community to take action as well.
"The message I would like to share with the community is that the most important thing is that we do something. It doesn't have to be something really big, but if we are all on the same page and we all want the same thing for the ocean and for nature, we will get to the important people who can potentially make systematic changes. So start with the small things. Find small associations of people around your area who are doing something for the ocean and help them. Join them. Spread the word. All these actions can help towards big change." - Carla Henriquez
