In the latest episode of 'Von Froth, The Life Of Nic Von Rupp' the Portuguese big wave surfer scores his favorite slab as good as it gets.
"It's been a long winter surfing Nazaré, so it feels so good to get back to my roots," Von Rupp remarked. "It was amazing to come back to the spot that gave me everything, the good and the bad moments, and to share the waves with all the boys."
Remarkably, this session went down the day after the Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge back in January. With the physical exertion the event required, plus the emotional impact of fellow Portuguese surfer Alex Botelho's near death incident, Nic and his team were understandably drained.
However, Von Rupp has been challenging himself at this wave for a decade and the forecast was as good as he'd ever seen. The secret reef only turns on from a specific swell size, angle and tide combination.
"The goal is to get the biggest barrel of my life out there," he said before the session. "The one I have been chasing for years and years."
In a session that lasted for six hours, Von Rupp came pretty close to achieving his goal -- and he was not alone. Tom Lowe scored one of the waves of the day while Russell Bierke, Frederico Morais, Torrey Meister and Miguel Blanco all scored bombs in what was one of the most memorable slab sessions of the year.
