Espinho Brings Longboarders and Juniors Back to Portugal in April
Nicolas Leroy
While the Qualifying Series are well underway for surfers from the Old Continent, longboarders and junior athletes haven't yet donned the competition jersey. Early April, they'll finally launch their 2019 qualifying campaigns, in Espinho, Portugal.
What?
First up will be longboarders in the Men and Women's Longboard Pro Espinho, from April 5-7. The 2019 season will consist of three events to determine the winners of the regional longboard tour.
Last year, surfers had to battle gigantic conditions that tested even the strongest in the field, as Justine Dupont and Edouard Delpero came out victorious.
Broken boards and jaw-dropping rides were also the norm in the Men and Women's Junior Pro Espinho the following week in Espinho. The under-18 surfers will once again take center-stage from April 10-14 this year for their own opening event of the season. Reigning event winner Melania Suarez Diaz will be back to defend her title while Mathis Crozon has graduated to the QS and will leave the door open for a new face to claim the Espinho title.
Where?
Praia de Baia has been the host of several events since 2014 and provided the worst and best of what the Atlantic can offer on the European coastlines. From bluebird, perfect beach days, to scary angry beach breaks, Espinho has got it all.
Conditions can be all-time and pump perfect A-frames along the beach, and a beast of a right-hander will occasionally wake up on a solid swell along the breakwall.
When?
Tune in from April 5-14, 2019 and check out all the photos, videos and updates right here!
