Havaianos reinam em casa no WSL Big Wave de Jaws

Os havaianos comandaram o show nas ondas gigantes de Pe´ahi, mais conhecida por Jaws, no Havaí. Eles dominaram o pódio do segundo desafio do World Surf League Big Wave Tour, encerrado nesta terça-feira na ilha de Oahu. O campeão do Jaws Challenge foi Billy Kemper, com Kai Lenny ficando em segundo lugar, Albee Layer em terceiro, Tyler Larrone em quarto e Koa Rothman em sexto na final, atrás do sul-africano Grant Baker, vencedor da etapa passada em Nazaré, Portugal. O único brasileiro no Havaí, Lucas "Chumbo" Chianca, foi barrado pelo campeão nas semifinais e ficou com o sétimo lugar em Jaws.
"Ontem (segunda-feira) foi, provavelmente, o dia mais radical da competição, mas hoje também deu ondas incríveis para terminar o evento", disse Billy Kemper. "Esta vitória é para a minha mãe, que está sempre olhando para mim. Menos de um mês e meio atrás, eu estava sentado numa clínica em Los Angeles, fazendo exames de ressonância magnética, me perguntando se seria capaz de surfar neste inverno. Eu rasquei o adutor no meu quadril, mas fiquei treinando forte por quatro meses seguidos com o Kahea Hart e meus nutricionistas, para estar hoje aqui, então estou muito feliz".
A vitória de Billy Kemper no Jaws Challenge foi confirmada em sua última onda, que valeu 8,07. Ela foi multiplicada por dois e o resultado somado com o 7,70 da primeira, para superar Kai Lenny por uma pequena vantagem de 23,84 a 23,56 pontos. O vice-campeão ganhou a maior nota da bateria, 8,33, porém teve que computar o 6,90 da outra única onda que surfou. O terceiro colocado, Kai Lenny, totalizou 17,40 pontos e Tyler Larronde ficou em quarto com 16,06. Os outros dois finalistas só tiveram notas baixas e ficaram nas últimas posições.
Os havaianos aproveitaram bem o melhor conhecimento em surfar Jaws quando o mar está grande. O big-rider brasileiro, Lucas "Chumbo" Chianca, campeão da etapa de Nazaré em Portugal no ano passado e vice neste ano, não conseguiu o mesmo desempenho nas ondas de Pe´ahi. Ele disputou o primeiro confronto da terça-feira e sua maior nota foi 5,0, suficiente para avançar para as semifinais em terceiro lugar na bateria vencida por Nathan Florence, com o também havaiano Albee Layer passando em segundo. Ambos com mais de 17 pontos, contra 14,83 do surfista de Saquarema (RJ).
Nas semifinais, Chumbo até conseguiu uma nota maior, 5,77. Só que seus adversários foram melhores novamente e desta vez acabou desclassificado em quarto lugar. Ele perdeu a vaga na grande final para o campeão do Jaws Challenge, Billy Kemper, que ficou em terceiro com 18,70 pontos, superando os 16,31 do brasileiro. Albee Layer venceu por 22,43 pontos e o sul-africano Grant Baker, que impediu o bicampeonato de Lucas Chianca em Nazaré, passou em segundo para mais uma decisão com 19,77.
