ASP Prime SATA Airlines Azores Pro Confirmed for September 2014
WSL
ASP Europe is pleased to confirm the sixth edition of the SATA Airline Azores Pro, a Prime rated event opened to the World's Best 100 surfers, to be held at the iconic Praia de Santa Barbara from September 2 - 7, 2014.
A favorite amongst the crowd of traveling QS campaigners in Europe for its beautiful black-sanded beaches, clean powerful waves and the array of down-time adventures available on the island, Sao Miguel will once again play host to some dramatic exchanges in the hunt for the coveted 6500 ranking points and prize money on offer.
“It's a huge pleasure to have a PRIME event in the Azores, and in particular on the island of São Miguel, which proves the correctness, consistency and quality of the waves are a certainty in Santa Barbara, Ribeira Grande,†said Rodrigo Herédia, event organizer. “The increasing uptake by WCT surfers has been an acknowledgment and this year with only seven PRIME events I'm sure that participation will be even higher. We will strive to get the world's best surfers in the Azores.â€
Over the years, Sao Miguel has contributed to the rise and fall of surfers aiming for the World Championship Tour qualifying spots, with an A-list of past winners including C.J Hobgood (USA) and Willian Cardoso (BRA) amongst others.
“The SATA Airlines Azores Pro has established itself as one of the most exciting and sought-after trophies on the ASP calendar,†Rob Gunning, ASP Europe Tour Manager stated. “The event window is ideal for catching the first ground swells of the season which can produce high performance quality waves for this PRIME event which is so important in the second half of the year for the surfer's qualification campaigns. Each year we see improvements at the event and organizers have already commenced planning a larger event site with a new and improved surfer's area for the world's best surfers.â€
The SATA Airlines Azores Pro is organized by DAAZ Eventos with the support of the following event partners: SATA Airlines, do Turismo dos Açores, Câmara Municipal da Ribeira Grande, Sumol and Moche amongst other.
