A small but impressive field of elite Australian and international junior surfers will converge on the wave-rich Margaret River this weekend, for the second of seven qualifying Subway® Surf Series Pro Junior events, sanctioned by the World Surf League (WSL).

Surfers from four different nations including Indonesia, New Zealand and Japan, will line up in a revised one-day format on Saturday 6th February, with 32 males and 16 females set to participate in the event.

Headlining an impressive field of local talent, Yallingup's Kael Walsh competes in his home event as the current Australasia Pro Junior ratings leader, after winning the opening event of the Subway® Pro Junior series on the Gold Coast last week.

Sixteen-year-old Walsh is keen to back up his performance in the powerful waves that have groomed his surfing.

"I'm so amped to have an event here in WA," said Walsh. "It will be great to show some of the boys around and hopefully we score some good waves for the comp."

Big names set to challenge Walsh on his home soil include; Ethan Ewing (QLD), Luke Wrice (NSW), Quinn Bruce (QLD), Reef Heazlewood (QLD) and Kai Warner (NSW).

Margaret River locals Emi Campbell, Mia McCarthy and Bailee Hastie, are all looking forward to the challenge of competing against the best girls in the country on their home turf next week.

"The waves are big and powerful over here and that's how we like it," said McCarthy. "It's definitely an advantage having an event here in WA."

Lucy Callister (QLD), India Robinson (QLD) and Laura Poncini (QLD) are all confirmed to compete in the 18 and under women's division.

SUBWAY Marketing Manager Lara Corbiere was delighted to continue to support junior surfing in its new-look competition.

"Subway is committed to healthy active living and our aim for the Subway® Surf Series is to help fuel junior surfers to go achieve their dreams. Our new association with the WSL will do just that and we can't wait to see the amazing talent from the groms," Corbiere said.

The WSL sanctioned Subway® Pro Junior events, which includes 18 and under men's and women's divisions, form part of the 2016 WSL Australasian Junior Qualifying Series (JQS), providing the winning athletes with an opportunity to win a coveted world title, at the WSL World Junior Championships in early 2017.

The Subway® Surf Series is proudly supported by WSL, Surfing Australia and Billabong.
