Davey Cathels (AUS) launched himself into the qualification conversation with a second-place finish at the QS 10,000 in Sao Paulo. At No. 8 he's got a little distance between himself and the cutoff, but with as many as 17 surfers clamoring to break in, he will need to continue his momentum at Haleiwa. -- @daveycathels: our kidding!
