Comp Countdown: Erickson's Road to Surf City
WSL
Californian Sage Erickson, who's ranked No. 17 in the world, has a busy week ahead of her: After defending her 2014 win at the Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro QS 6,000, she will head straight from Oceanside to Huntington Beach for the Vans US Open of Surfing. Erickson gives a glimpse of her life on Sunday, July 19.
I woke up at...6:15 a.m., my alarm goes off. 6:15 is normal, I consider it mildly sleeping in. I have coffee with my Mom every morning for the most part. She's an amazing woman and I miss her all the time when I'm on the road.
The first thing I did was...surf. Pre event, I always get at least one long surf in everyday up to the day before my heat. The summer up north [in Santa Barbara] has been pretty small and windy. Anything counts at this point. Rain or shine, one foot or five. It all leads up to Round 1 prep.
For lunch...I've been getting fresh organic farmed veggies from Ojai lately. Once a week I buy a box, filled with every nutrient my body needs to be healthy and strong.
Today I had to...paint my surfboard. Doing art on my board calms my mind. Anything creative rather. I'm not the type that focuses 100% on surfing all day, every day. Ridicule me for that statement, but it's true. I tend to do better if I can turn my mind off for a bit and just hear my own thoughts, fight my own battles and visualize how I want my future to unfold.
Training today consisted of...a second surf at 5:30 p.m.
In the afternoon...I did a couple interviews! Fox Sports was the one I enjoyed the most. Heading into the Supergirl Pro [beginning July 24], which I won last year, I'll have a few extra eyes on me. It's a little more pressure, but a lot more excitement!
Before I went to bed...Never too late to study. I've had an urge to hone my English lately. The more knowledgeable you can be the better. Learning is endless and I want to be the best me that I can be. I hope my 7th grade English teacher doesn't read this!
