Californian Shane Beschen earned pro surfing's first perfect heat in 1996 at the Billabong Kirra Pro on Australia's Gold Coast. And while there have been six perfect heats since then, none have totaled 30 points. Before 2002, heat totals consisted of a surfer's top three waves, unlike the two-wave system used today. By 2005, professional surfing had moved to two-wave heat totals and Kelly Slater (USA) was, unsurprisingly, the first to score a perfect heat in the new system. He earned his perfect 20 while going up against Damien Hobgood (USA) in the 2005 Billabong Pro Tahiti Final. The win was another step toward his seventh World Title.
Aussie Joel Parkinson clinched the 2008 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing title with an equal-ninth finish at Pipe and two equal fifths at Sunset and Haleiwa. But the real story was his Perfect 20 in Pipe's Round 3.
