Do Carmo, Coutinho Score Wildcards for Oi Rio Pro

David do Carmo and Luana Coutinho have been named as the event wildcards for the Oi Rio Pro and the Oi Rio Women's Pro, the next two Championship Tour (CT) contests. The two Brazilians will take on the top seeds once competition gets underway Monday, May 11. Along with Do Carmo, a second wildcard for the men's event will be determined after the Quiksilver Pro Saquarema.

Do Carmo made his mark on the CT last year when he defeated then-reigning World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) in Round 2 of the Rio Pro. In the next round he led 11-time World Champ Kelly Slater (USA) for the majority of their heat, though Slater ultimately won the heat. On the Qualifying Series (QS), Do Carmo's best finishes in 2014 were ninth place at the 6 Star-rated Burton Toyota Pro and at the Mahalo Surf Eco Festival. His career best is a runner-up finish at the 2013 Rip Curl Pro Piedras Negras Pro Ilo-Moquega. That same year, he became the Brazilian Professional Surfing Champion, a regional title.
Coutinho will take on Jeep rankings leader Carissa Moore (HAW) and Dimity Stoyle (AUS) in Round 1, Heat 3. Coutinho has previously proved her mettle in big waves when she competed in the 2010-2011 Nelscott Reef Classic finishing in fifth. In that event, she placed ahead of fellow Brazilian and CT competitor Silvana Lima as well as current Big Wave Tour commissioner Peter Mel. Since then, she's sporadically participated in Qualifying Series events, finishing 17th last year in the Oceano Santa Catarina Pro and at the Mahalo Surf Eco Festival.
Watch Do Carmo and Coutinho take on the Top 34 and the Top 17 once competition kicks off at Barra da Tijuca. Both events will stream LIVE on the WSL site and on the WSL app. Do Carmo and Coutinho are now both eligible for Fantasy Surfing lineups.
