Day 4 of the Papara Surf Festival was treated to a bump in the swell in the 3-foot range as Quarterfinals were run and won. The event's Semifinalists for the Vahine Pro Junior, the men's Papara Pro Junior and the men's QS1000 all emerged.
Holly Wawn (AUS) and Isabella Nichols (AUS) are in the midst of an exciting WSL Australasia Junior Qualifying Series (JQS) championship race and both surfed strong winning their heats. Local talent Karelle Poppke (PYF) also posted an impressive heat win.
"That was fun, there was a couple really rippable waves," Nichols said. "I think Holly and I are really close on the rankings so that's pretty nervewracking, so I'd like to do well here. I've been surfing Teahupo'o on the lay days and that's been really fun. Papara is sick and it's so good to surf it with only another girl out."
In the afternoon the men hit the water for both the Junior and QS1000 (Qualifying Series) with plenty of big turns and monster aerials going down in the pumping surf to. Standout performers included O'Neill Massin (PYF) who posted the highest two wave heat total of the event thus far with 17.75.
"I knew Luke (Hynd) surfed good and that was a really hard heat," Massin said. "My friends told me that if he'd made that last turn he would've had the score. I just did the best I could and I'm happy. I'm glad that Mihimana (Braye) got into the Semifinal because he beat me in the Final at Rangiroa, so now I have the chance to beat him."
