About Sofía Mulánovich
Sofía Mulánovich was born in Punta Hermosa, Lima in 1983 to parents of Croatian heritage, who had immigrated to Peru. Her father was a surfer, as was her older brothers, and Sofía was surfing by the age of four.
Her natural talent and total commitment to the sport were identified early, and under the mentorship of famed Peruvian coach Roberto Meza she was competing on the World Tour by the time she was 18. She finished as the World No. 7 in her rookie year in 2003, and claimed the World Title in 2004, winning three of the six CT events. She was the first Peruvian surfer ever to win a CT event and the first Latin American ever to win the World Title.
Mulánovich competed for another decade on the CT, finishing as the runner-up in 2007, and finishing in the top five for seven consecutive years. After stepping away from the tour she kept giving back to the sport. In 2015 she opened the Proyecto Sofía Mulánovich, a surfing academy for youths from all backgrounds in her hometown of Punta Hermosa.
In 2019 Mulánovich added to her incredible career by winning the ISA World Surfing Games in Japan and gaining Olympic qualification for the Tokyo Games. She would travel to Japan as the eldest surfer in the competition and with a real chance of adding a remarkable finish to one of the greatest surfing careers of all time.
